Featured photo: “The Trinity of the Holy Handymen,” by Linda Ingraham, on view at {9} The Gallery on Grand Avenue in Phoenix. I was so mellowed out from my silent two-hour walk at the Rio Salado Habitat Restoration Area on Saturday, with the Museum of Walking, that I set aside too little time for Art Detour … Continue reading Photo highlights: Art Detour 29

Featured photo: “Flowers, Rocks, and Wind III,” made of wood, aluminum and acrylic, by Michael Afsa, as seen at Lotus Contemporary. In keeping with my previous post about the abundance of high-caliber art that’s traveled to the Phoenix area this month, this post homes in on the fine work being done by local artists, as … Continue reading Photo highlights: Third Friday, 12/18/15

I heard that the lead-in to the Art Detour weekend-long art walk in downtown Phoenix — First Friday on March 6, 2015 — was crazy busy.  Glad I opted for a Sunday excursion on March 8, when the doors of dozens of studios, galleries and other art spaces were welcoming visitors during a highly walkable … Continue reading Photo highlights from Art Detour 27

Friendly faces from Art Detour 26

And how was your Art Detour experience of March 8-9, 2014? Art Detour is, after all, the reigning art walk experience in central Phoenix, running for a whole weekend each spring and usually occurring in our best Chamber of Commerce weather. Art Detour 26 encompassed about six dozen galleries, art spaces and artist studios in … Continue reading Friendly faces from Art Detour 26

Third Friday Artwalk: A lot of ground to cover

It’s a sign, a very good sign, of the growing vibrancy of the downtown Phoenix art scene that my list of galleries to see during last week’s Third Friday artwalk numbered almost a dozen. Wish I could say I made it to all of those galleries, but the ones that I did pop into offered … Continue reading Third Friday Artwalk: A lot of ground to cover

"Almost a native" goes the saying if you have lived in Phoenix for a good chunk of your life. That's me -- a desert rat -- and my experiences as a writer and editor have led me to believe that our local art scene is highly underrated. This website might not remedy that, but it will introduce readers to museums and galleries and art in public spaces -- all around our beautiful desert Valley.

Seemed the right time for another selfie at “Big Sweep” - one of my very favorite spots in the Mile High City. RIP to the recently departed artist #claesoldenburg #denverpublicart #denverartmuseum #totalcoloradan #warbyparker
So fitting to see the work of @annielopezartist in the comprehensive exhibition “Traitor, Survivor, Icon: The Legacy of La Malinche” @denverartmuseum - a persuasive case thru historical and contemporary art to rise above all the long-held misogynistic and racist views of a famous woman in Mexican history. Annie receives a shout-out in an LA Times review of the show, which runs thru May 8. #annielopez #arizonaartists #lamalinche #traitorsurvivoricon #denverartmuseum
Although it was a very quick @scottsdale_artwalk on Main Street, I saw several wonderful pieces, including: “The Unbearable Lightness of Guide Dogs” by Kris Manzanares @roysecontemporary , “SB0318” by Kaori Takamura and “Searching for Connections 1” by Diane Silver, both @gebert_contemporary , “Traveling Whispers” by Jon Wassom @marshallgallery and a fun piece of sidewalk art. #scottsdaleart #krismanzanares #kaoritakamura #dianesilverstudio #jonwassomart #arizonaartists #minidesertvacay
I run into @angelaellsworth_studio in the most unexpected places! Here’s “Seer Bonnet XVIII (Ruth),” 2011, at the Palm Springs Art Museum—which is a compact but excellent space. Keeping Angela company in the Modern and Contemporary Art wing is a Maya Lin floor installation and on a nearby wall, a Mark Bradford. #angelaellsworth #arizonaartists #seerbonnets #palmspringsartmuseum #desertvacay
Same spot, almost exactly three years later. Still in Colorado! #differentsunglasses
It’s gonna take a lot of work to unify our country. Learn about one Arizona artist’s efforts to foster civility, compassion and courage through a massive participatory textile art project.
