Drip, drip, drip …

If you are on East Camelback Road in the next two weeks and have a few moments to pop into Shemer Art Center, you will see a few intriguing works themed around water – appropriate for the desert, no? In addition, you will see how Shemer — mostly known around the Arcadia neighborhood as a … Continue reading Drip, drip, drip …

Wherein I explore art in Phoenix, intrepidly

With every foray I make into the First Friday Artwalk on Roosevelt Row in downtown Phoenix, I mull over these questions: Will I feel out of place as a Baby Boomer amid all the “youngsters”? Will I find a parking place? Has anyone painted over the uglier street murals yet? (Sorry, but a lot of … Continue reading Wherein I explore art in Phoenix, intrepidly

Here’s your excuse to go to Gilbert

With a focus on photography – showing it and teaching it – the new gallery Art Intersection has the potential to be a favored destination in the heart of Gilbert’s historic district. The gallery is in an upstairs wing of a lovely old building called Heritage Court, along Gilbert Road. The gallery is spacious; in … Continue reading Here’s your excuse to go to Gilbert

"Almost a native" goes the saying if you have lived in Phoenix for a good chunk of your life. That's me -- a desert rat -- and my experiences as a writer and editor have led me to believe that our local art scene is highly underrated. This website might not remedy that, but it will introduce readers to museums and galleries and art in public spaces -- all around our beautiful desert Valley.

Seemed the right time for another selfie at “Big Sweep” - one of my very favorite spots in the Mile High City. RIP to the recently departed artist #claesoldenburg #denverpublicart #denverartmuseum #totalcoloradan #warbyparker
So fitting to see the work of @annielopezartist in the comprehensive exhibition “Traitor, Survivor, Icon: The Legacy of La Malinche” @denverartmuseum - a persuasive case thru historical and contemporary art to rise above all the long-held misogynistic and racist views of a famous woman in Mexican history. Annie receives a shout-out in an LA Times review of the show, which runs thru May 8. #annielopez #arizonaartists #lamalinche #traitorsurvivoricon #denverartmuseum
Although it was a very quick @scottsdale_artwalk on Main Street, I saw several wonderful pieces, including: “The Unbearable Lightness of Guide Dogs” by Kris Manzanares @roysecontemporary , “SB0318” by Kaori Takamura and “Searching for Connections 1” by Diane Silver, both @gebert_contemporary , “Traveling Whispers” by Jon Wassom @marshallgallery and a fun piece of sidewalk art. #scottsdaleart #krismanzanares #kaoritakamura #dianesilverstudio #jonwassomart #arizonaartists #minidesertvacay
I run into @angelaellsworth_studio in the most unexpected places! Here’s “Seer Bonnet XVIII (Ruth),” 2011, at the Palm Springs Art Museum—which is a compact but excellent space. Keeping Angela company in the Modern and Contemporary Art wing is a Maya Lin floor installation and on a nearby wall, a Mark Bradford. #angelaellsworth #arizonaartists #seerbonnets #palmspringsartmuseum #desertvacay
Same spot, almost exactly three years later. Still in Colorado! #differentsunglasses
It’s gonna take a lot of work to unify our country. Learn about one Arizona artist’s efforts to foster civility, compassion and courage through a massive participatory textile art project.
