Think small: ‘Petite’ at Calvin Charles

In trying to come up with an analogy to artists who break form and create miniatures, I think of what it would mean to a writer: Condensing a major news story into a tweet of 140 characters? Completing a novel on an iPad mini? No doubt, it would be tough. The artists in the “Petite” … Continue reading Think small: ‘Petite’ at Calvin Charles

Fine art, fine setting at Scottsdale Waterfront

Unusual things can happen when you strike up conversations with artists at an art festival. I found this out while chatting with sculptor Merrill Orr at the recent Waterfront Fine Art & Wine Festival, a Thunderbird Artists event. “Have you ever worked with alabaster?” he asked. He knew the answer to that question as he … Continue reading Fine art, fine setting at Scottsdale Waterfront

Old Town Scottsdale was a-glitter

It’s just so pleasant to get back into art-strolling nights, and Old Town Scottsdale knows how to put on an art show. Last night, October 18, launched the 38th year of the city’s Thursday-evening art walk, which is hard for even an old-timer like me to believe. To celebrate, the gallery community kicked it up … Continue reading Old Town Scottsdale was a-glitter

No lack of talent in Phoenix

Last night was Third Friday, the toned-down version of First Friday, during which there is usually more emphasis on the galleries versus the street carnival. My best art-walking stop was at Willo North, a small but pleasant gallery on Seventh Avenue, a couple miles north of downtown. The reason? The exhibit refreshed my memory regarding … Continue reading No lack of talent in Phoenix

You can always spare time for an art walk

By last night, Friday evening, I was frazzled from a busy week and from our current atypical desert humidity. But I was determined to check out First Friday in central Phoenix, so I plotted out two galleries to see that I had never seen before. First stop was Studio 6 at the Artery, 625 E. … Continue reading You can always spare time for an art walk

"Almost a native" goes the saying if you have lived in Phoenix for a good chunk of your life. That's me -- a desert rat -- and my experiences as a writer and editor have led me to believe that our local art scene is highly underrated. This website might not remedy that, but it will introduce readers to museums and galleries and art in public spaces -- all around our beautiful desert Valley.
